KATRINA STILL KILLING MEDICAL EXPERT SAY

Debate rages over whether hurricane Katrina is still contributing to New Orleans high death rate. It is nearly two year ago. Storm survivors are dying from both psychological and physical stress, from the dust and mold still in dwellings to finacial problems to fear of crime, health experts and officals say. People who are killing themselves because they feel they can't go on. The death toll has risd 25 percent 14.3 per 1,000. the city was abondoned after katrina struck Aug 29, 2005 and many people did not begin returing until mid- 2006. There are high rates of mental health probelms amoung the survivors and previous research has found that mental disorders are predictors of earlier death rates were seeing triple the number of people with mental health probelems as we were before katrina. Depression, suicidal, anxiety abuse of drugs and alcohol. Many storm damaged hospitals and some are not operating fully. Before katrina the news paper printed about a page daily. Now three and four pages are not uncommon.
